Consider a call to be a
Rochester Franciscan if you…
• are between the ages
of 20 and 45.
• are in good physical and psychological health.
• can commit yourself to be a
compassionate presence for peace in our world.
• will strive for justice and reverence
for all creation.
• desire to follow Jesus in the spirit of
Saint Francis, Saint Clare and Mother Alfred Moes.
Entrance Process/Stages
There are six distinct stages of growth as a woman
becomes a Rochester Franciscan Sister.
•An Interested Person or Inquirer enters into a
time of mutual getting-acquainted and discernment about
one's vocation. You live at home and continue working.
•As a Companion, you continue to live at home,
meeting with your Companion Sister from time to time for
mutual support and sharing as you clarify your
vocational call.
•An Associate lives with a Rochester Franciscan
Community of women, sharing life with Sisters while
continuing her ministry/work. This is an opportunity to
bond with the larger Community as well as to have an
experience of small group living.

•During the Novitiate, the focus is on deepening
one's spirituality. In distancing from professional
involvement, a woman is able to enter into prayer and
study with a focused heart. Novitiate is two years in
length. It currently takes place in the U.S. at the Common
Franciscan Novitiate for women from 18 different
Franciscan congregations. In Bogóta, Colombia, there is a
Novitiate for the Rochester Franciscan Colombian women.

•Temporary Vows are a public profession of vows.
A woman promises to live in poverty, chastity and
obedience for a period of three years. After three years
the vows may be renewed.
•Life Vows are a final and permanent commitment
to the Rochester Franciscan way of life.
