The former Clare Chapel at Assisi
Heights was once space used by Franciscan novices, but opened
its doors on Friday, October 5, to two venerable Rochester
institutions: Mayo Clinic and the Rochester Franciscan Order. It
was called “an uncommon partnership” by guest speaker Rev.Ed
Foley, OFM Cap, who gave the dedication address.
Christian-specific symbols, including the pews and the alter,
have been removed, and comfortable seating, lots of greenery,
and a fountain were added, resulting in a meditative ambience
where visitors from nearby conference rooms can have quiet time
to rest or re-center themselves.
The new Reflection Space is a gift to Mayo from the Sisters to
thank them for their work in updating part of Assisi Heights in
recent years. The space was planned by a task force led by
Sister Jean Keniry, and included representatives of
Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Judaism as well as an
agnostic.
“The way the reflective space was planned is the way the world
ought to be run,” said S. Jean. “With so much of the world at
war with itself, it just seemed like one small piece we could do
to promote…a way of transcending and being respectful of various
religious traditions.”
