Cojourning: Our Lay Associate Program
Cojourning is a formal covenant
between the Franciscan Sisters of Rochester and men or
women in the broader community. Cojourners and Sisters
seek connection with each other because of a desire for
spiritual growth and support and because of common
values and concerns. The "journey" takes us toward a
vision of life where each person brings his or her
unique self to share in a spirit of friendship, sharing
Franciscan spirituality and living out the mission of
being a compassionate presence for peace, striving for
justice and reverencing all of creation, thus
strengthening the individual Cojourners and the Sisters
of the Congregation. The expressions of this life are as
varied as the individuals involved and create a true
kinship that draws us together as people of God.
Do I have to live in Rochester?
No. Cojourners live in all parts of the world. What is
most important is not proximity but a shared spirit that
transcends time and distance.

Can only
Catholics be Cojourners?
No. Cojourners can be men and women of any faith
tradition, nationality and creed. What is held in common
is a Franciscan spirit.
Are there any financial or legal obligations?
There is no stated financial obligation on the part of
the Cojourner, except to fund each one's own
participation in events, retreats, etc. There are no
legal obligations on the part of the Congregation or the
Cojourner.
