Justice and Peace

"Individuals have international duties which transcend the national obligations of obedience... therefore [individuals] have the duty to violate domestic laws to prevent crimes against peace and humanity from occurring."
                                                                                                                       -- Nuremberg International Military Tribunal

The Justice and Peace Network has three parts.
1) The Justice and Peace Network is a group of 40-50 Sisters and Cojourners who meet annually. They receive the Justice and Peace Network News and other pertinent information to actively support issues agreed on at the annual meeting. In these six years some of the issues have been 1. global climate change 2. Colombia 3. SOA- Western Hemispheric Institute for Security Cooperation 4. Star Wars 5. military expansion 6. TANF-Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.

2) The Justice and Peace Core Committee is made up of seven Sisters and Cojourners who meet monthly by conference call. Between annual meetings, the Justice and Peace Core Committee is an active group following justice issues, planning the quarterly Network News, and preparing the annual meeting.

3) The third part of the organization is the Sub-Committee for Socially Responsible Investment Activities. This sub-committee meets quarterly by conference call to review the Congregational stock holdings and justice issues related to any of these investments. Resolutions to address justice issues are regularly co-filed with other religious communities and presented at stockholder annual meetings.

The last six years we have continued to participate in the School of the Americas demonstration, attended several national conferences including the National Catholic Rural Life Conference and Religious Orders Partnership.

We need to acknowledge the justice and peace efforts that all of us do in our daily lives. The challenge for those engaged in this work is to balance prayer and human support in an effort to move toward a more just world. The Community commitment to integrate the 4 Principles of the Earth Charter in all aspects of Congregational life is an indication of continuing our focus on justice and peace issues within ourselves and the world. As women committed to furthering the message of the Gospel, we do not have a choice about our justice and peace work.
